DESCRIPTION

Salary - $15 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY: This is a part time position performing duties as a Crime Lab Firearm Examiner Intern under the direct supervision of the Crime Lab Supervisor and Firearm Examiners.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: FORENSIC CRIME LAB TECHNICIAN ASSISTANT.

  • Receive training and perform all forms of firearm examination.
  • Test fire firearms
  • Perform IBIS entries.
  • E-trace firearms and update test fire log.
  • Perform preliminary examination on evidence. Determine subsequent analysis or examination needed and collect additional evidence as needed.
  • Assist in keeping Potential connection logs.
  • Answer phones and assist with evidence intake.
  • Process firearm evidence for outside agencies, such as: ATF, Drug Investigation Unit, Mishawaka Police Department, St. Joseph County Sheriffs Department and Goshen Police Department,

NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: CRIME TECH-FIREARMS

  • Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and safety equipment.
  • Assist in restocking evidence packaging room if needed.
  • Responsible to the Crime Lab Supervisor and is routinely supervised by the Supervisor and/or Firearm Examiners.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma required, and currently enrolled in or completed a higher education studying forensic science or criminal justice preferred.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and operate a motor vehicle.
  • Successfully complete a polygraph examination, criminal history background and personal background with no criminal record.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:

  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Ability to multitask, use good judgement, and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both orally and in writing with scientific and non-scientific personnel.

CERTIFICATES, LICENCE, REGISTRATION:Valid Drivers License.

The employee is occasionally required to walk, use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Dexterity sufficient to manipulate instruments and small items accurately over an extended period, as well as write labels on small items. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required in this job include sufficient vision to read fine print on computers, distinguish fine details when looking through scientific instruments to examine evidence items, as well as distinguish color, contrast, patterns, and dimensions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:The employee may work indoors and outdoors. Conditions indoors will be in a temperature-controlled environment but exposed to changing weather conditions outdoors. Storage room areas can be dusty. Lab environment may require the use of respirators, glove , or masks. Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, human body fluids, blood borne pathogens, biological hazards such as viruses and germs, and other hazardous evidence items.
