About the Madison State Hospital:

Madison State Hospital is located in a rural area overlooking the Ohio River and has served the citizens of Indiana for over a century, opening its door to patients in 1910. As part of the Indiana State Psychiatric Hospital Network, our staff offer comprehensive treatment programs utilizing a Trauma Informed Care approach. Patients admitted for treatment can participate in individual therapy, medication therapy, family therapy, psycho-educational groups, rehabilitation therapies, chaplain services, co-occurring programming, as well as employment opportunities. U nit-based programming is augmented with campus-wide specialty groups. MSH has been a state leader in evidenced-based medication prescribing to both reduce the risks associated with polypharmacy and optimize clinical outcomes. The hospital clinical and medical leadership collaborate with the unit treatment teams to provide the most contemporary and comprehensive care possible.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $193,102.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

Role Overview:

The Psychiatric Medical Director directs the psychiatric services of the hospital. You will be the final authority for patient psychiatric evaluations. You will review recommendations, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment plans. You will ensure that services and interventions are conducted within professional standards and comply with institutional policies. You will have a major contribution to policies, treatment programs, evaluations, and planning. The Director also maintains the integrity of services treatments, policies, and standards by remaining current on research and professional affiliations.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are:

  • Ensure patients are provided with a quality of care consistent with contemporary professional standards.

  • Ensure all patient information and notes are documented in the patient’s medical record.

  • Notify the Medical Staff Organization and the Hospital administration of any adverse actions taken against the individual by any healthcare facility, state licensure board, drug enforcement administration, or court of law in a malpractice action.

  • Ensure each patient’s medical condition is assessed, managed, and treated by a licensed physician.

  • Ensure medical staff play an active role in the education of patients, families, and staff.

  • Coordinate care, treatment, and services with other practitioners and hospital personnel, as relevant to the care, treatment, and services of an individual patient. Sign and perform the duties of a collaborative agreement of advanced practice RNs for prescriptive authority.

  • Serve on selected standing hospital committees and demonstrate active participation, providing input within areas of competence.

  • Develop and implement organizational policies and procedures for the facility or medical unit.

  • Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.

  • Oversee the administration of psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders.

  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.

  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Possess an MD or DO.

  • Completion of an accredited residency training program in Psychiatry.

  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the state of Indiana as issued by the Indiana Health Professions Bureau.

  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.

  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

  • The ability to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable him/her to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, & members of healthcare teams.

  • The ability to demonstrate an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided.

  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
