    Position Summary

    The Corporate Safety Director is responsible for managing the environmental, health and safety associated with construction projects and company operations. The Safety Director will proactively plan, direct and implement the Company’s safety program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment. This will include developing and advancing cutting-edge safety strategies through our enterprise. The Safety Director supports Division Management & Field Safety Managers in ensuring each construction project is conducting operations in a safe manner for the protection of our employees, clients, subcontractors and the general public. Successful collaboration with internal partners in Traylor Bros. and Traylor Construction Group is critical to the success of this leader. The Safety Director ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, county, and local safety related regulations. The Safety Director sets the tone for corporate environmental, health and safety culture, demonstrates strong leadership skills, works well in a team environment, has excellent communication skills and strives to enrich the Company Culture “Traylor Driven – Respect, Pride, Connection.”

    Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Leads development of and clearly articulates Company’s strategic safety vision, objectives, initiatives, policies and procedures in order to build a safety culture dedicated to Traylor Bros., Inc. core behaviors which lead to best-in-class results

  • Provides proactive leadership and assumes ownership of building a best-in-class safety culture by 1) anticipating problems & providing solutions, 2) sharing knowledge with, and providing training, to all levels of management, field staff, preconstruction, and project teams, 3) through interactions with clients, subcontractors, and inspectors, and 4) creating an environment of learning, mentoring, and empowerment in order to promote employee engagement.

  • Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and conclusions, and monitors results to make improvements or take corrective action.

  • Ensures safety & health training meets the needs of internal and external (client & regulating entities) requirements, so staff has the safety training to safely perform tasks and jobs.

  • Leads incident investigations and ensure root cause and corrective actions are clearly articulated across company entities and projects as deemed appropriate.

  • Manages hazard assessment activities by 1) conducting and/or supervising safety inspections or assessments, and 2) analyzing inspection and incident data to identify opportunities to develop preventive and corrective practices.

  • Assists division management in recruiting, developing, and retaining key safety personnel throughout the company. Uses personal network to source candidates. Develops strong relationships with safety personnel while helping them manage their career development

  • Leads effective corporate safety calls as needed and reports out Key Predictive Indicators (KPI’s) as requested

  • Builds relationships and partners with peer safety leads within Traylor Construction Group to develop common policies and processes.

  • Develops annual business plan for safety and health department.

  • Provides guidance and support to project management & site safety managers toward developing a high-performance safety team and culture in alignment with Traylor Bros., Inc. strategic plan

  • Assists field safety personnel in establishing effective site-specific safety, occupational health and environmental protection programs

  • Conducts and supervises periodic safety, occupational health and environmental audits of field operations and advising all company management teams regarding technical adequacy and compliance with applicable client rules and regulations, federal and state regulations and/or laws and corporate regulations

  • Directs and assists in the investigation of serious accident and major environmental incidents

  • Assists project managers in applying accepted industrial hygiene procedures, techniques and work practices in a manner that reflects both technically sound and cost-effective use of corporate resources

  • Assists project managers in tracking, maintaining, and managing all legally required medical surveillance and environmental test records for the duration of each project

  • Assists in the planning, preparation and presentation of safety, health and environmental training for all supervisors and employees.

  • Assists project managers with the administration and coordination of the project security and fire protection program

  • Assumes additional responsibilities as directed by Co-Presidents

    Skills and Abilities

  • In-depth technical knowledge of construction-related OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards, and ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement effective corrective practices.

  • Must be an effective communicator, generating professional written material and delivering effective verbal presentations.

  • Ability to build trust, relationships and be a key strategic partner to leaders within Traylor Bros. and the greater Traylor Construction Group enterprise.

  • Ability to build strong relationships with clients and JV partners.

    Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety, safety management, construction or related field

  • OSHA 500, CSP certification preferable

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in construction industry safety management.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing & leading a structured safety program; self-performing general contractor or specialty contractor preferable

    Physical Demands

  • Extensive travel is required to visit projects, and attend training and meetings.

  • Ability to sit or stand for an entire shift

  • Required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.

  • Ability to conduct safety assessments and walkthroughs on complex construction project sites including elevated bridge and underground environments

  • Ability to lift, on an infrequent basis, up to or less than 50 pounds.
