We are looking for a talented Materials Engineering Technician, specializing in Metallurgy, to join our Metallurgic Engineering Team in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Utilizes advanced skills, knowledge, and experiences for leading projects or activities and performing analyses using Materials Engineering tools and standard instruments and test equipment, while positively impacting the organization's performance.

  • Applies advanced skills and experiences while preparing samples and specimens, operating analytical instruments and equipment, performing physical analyses, acquiring, and interpreting data, and documenting technical results in support of production and non-production engineering, quality, and manufacturing groups.

  • Effectively utilizes advanced skills and experiences to solve complex problems; compiles, analyzes and reports performance or progress information to management.

  • Develops and documents all laboratory methods.

  • Performs routine calibrations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repair of instruments and equipment.

  • Coordinates the collection, transportation, and documentation of chemical waste disposal.

  • Understands and applies appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work.

  • Actively mentors and trains apprentices, trainees, and technicians; manages training needs within the laboratory.

  • Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.

  • Coordinates programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking; handles projects that require significant decisions to be made to workflow and priorities; provides effective technical and project leadership.

  • Exercises independent decision-making and initiative for needed activities, problem-solving, creative technical and analytical work, and hands-on applications.

  • Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures and work instructions.

  • Participates in improvement projects; demonstrates adaptability and responsiveness to changing work needs and willingness to undertake new tasks.

  • Develops and gives presentations to engineers, customers, and suppliers.

  • Participates in self and team audits and associated corrective actions.

  • Performs other miscellaneous duties, as required.

  • Data Acquisition - Prepares samples, verifies equipment calibration, and performs tests according to an approved standard procedure or work instruction in a manner that ensures, and results in, data that can be trusted and delivered to the engineer or customer.

  • Data Reporting - Prepares documentation in a manner that clearly organizes and presents testing methods, instrument settings, data, and analysis to allow the engineer and customer to understand the results and form accurate conclusions and recommendations.

  • Material Characterization - Interprets mechanical, chemical, microstructural, and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print and correlates these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness; defines appropriate material characterization schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • High school diploma or certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience to the extent such experience meets applicable regulations.

  • A regionally applicable Certification (e.g. US Department of Labor) or a two-year associate degree from an accredited college program in a relevant field of study.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience

  • Requires significant relevant work experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training, or on-the-job experience.

  • Experience with metallographic sample preparation, hardness testing, and tensile testing preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The core duties are completing customer work orders by the requested completion date.

  • The types of analysis involved in these work orders include checking components against the material specification, failure analysis, chemical analysis, component imaging, mechanical properties, and microstructural analysis.

Necessary Experience:

  • Metallurgy background

  • Previous Materials Lab experience, and/or experience with performing these types of analyses.

  • Working in a team environment

  • Data Documentation and Reporting (Microsoft Office)

  • Mechanical Testing

  • Tensile Testing

  • Experience with labs.

  • Apprenticeship program

Quality

  • Follows all applicable standard work, process documentation, and quality procedures such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), poka-yoke, and visual standards.

  • Raises issues to minimize cost and quality exposures.

  • Performs quality inspections.

  • Identifies and controls non-conforming material.

Delivery

  • Operates manual and automated equipment to manufacture and assemble products in order to create the proper characteristics and dimensions necessary to meet customer expectations.

  • Demonstrates a high level of competency in core work skills.

  • Achieves production goals.

  • Works at the required cycle time or defined engineering standard.

  • Maintains clean and orderly work area, including routine housekeeping tasks and machine cleaning tasks, and performs planned operator care and maintenance tasks.

  • Remains flexible and performs other miscellaneous duties, as required, to meet production goals.

  • Works with peers, skilled trades, and support staff to maintain and identify equipment needing repair.

Teamwork

  • Communicates effectively with the assigned team and with all support teams.

  • Completes training and personal development in line with business requirements.

  • Participates actively in ways to improve quality, safety, process, material flow, and employee development.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
